What type of paint do I use?

There are 2 different types of paint, latex and oil. Older homes will have oil-based paint on the walls and most people today paint with latex. The only problem is that you can’t put latex over oil unless you have put a special primer on first. If you don’t put the primer on then your latex paint will peel off the wall.

There are also different paint finishes such as flat, eggshell, semi-gloss, and high-gloss.  Since a bedroom has less traffic you might go for flat or eggshell and a bathroom might need semi or high-gloss since they are more water resistant. Some of the darker shades tend to look kind of chalky in flat where as they would have just enough gloss in eggshell. If you have an old wall that has imperfections then you might want to consider a flat paint because it will hide these. Any of your glossy paints will highlight these imperfections. Most people who are just starting out will use eggshell so that it will give just enough gloss but hide the imperfections of their paint job.

A couple of other things to remember is to clean your paint brushes well after using them each day. Also make sure that you dispose of any paint properly to keep chemicals out of the drinking water.
